If the sludge level in a settling tank is allowed to rise close to the surface, there is a risk that solids will leave the tank and contaminate the next process step or be discharged into the watercourse. Alternatively, if the sludge level is not allowed to stabilize or form a blanket, or is pumped out too frequently, the settling process will not take place at all and the solids will remain in suspension. In addition, there is a risk that thin sludge or water will be pumped from the bottom of the tank into the sludge handling system, reducing the efficiency of this process.
